In the 1950's and 1960's, the Sahiwal was used in crossbreeding with local breeds. Subsequently it was used as a foundation breed in the development of the Mafriwal.

Mafriwal are a composite of 62.5% Holstein (North America) and 37.5% Zebu. The Zebu component is mainly composed of improved Kenyan Sahiwal or Brazilian Gir. The Minister of Agriculture of Malaysia declared Mafriwal a breed on 30 August 1997.

Mafriwal cattle are located in three Departments of Veterinary Service Farms in the state of Johore. These government farms are the Institute Haiwan, Air Hitam and Padang Hijau.
