The sheep inhabit areas of high rainfall (3 000 to 4 500 mm) in the lower area of the Sunderbans delta of the Ganga, humid and swampy in the monsoon, hence sheep graze on water logged ground during the rains and are well adapted to hot and humid climate.

They are non seasonal breeders and have the ability to breed all year around and lamb twice a year.
