The breed is well adapted to the wet and cold climate of the highlands at altitudes as high as 2500 m.

They are solid black, black with a white face or white patches overall on a mainly black background. The white patches are mostly found on the faces and underneath their stomach.

The breed is characterized by Small body size with slender legs; their ears are short (16 cm) and erect. Most of these animals have small humps and some bulls as well as a few cows have medium to large humps.
